Protocols for: Aseptic Dressing Techniques

1.       Check treatment orders

2.       Assemble necessary equipment

·         Include a clean surface on which to place treatment supplies in room and a plastic bag for disposal

·         Dressing supplies must be in original packages

·         Ointments and gels must be in original, sealed containers if they are to be placed in the open wound

·         Creams for lubrication do not require a sterile environment

3.       Inform resident of procedure to be performed and provide a private environment

4.       Wash hands and apply gloves

5.       Remove soiled dressing and dispose in plastic bag along with gloves

·         All soiled material must be removed from wound area prior to beginning treatment

·         If patient is soiled, provide peri care before beginning dressing change

6.       Wash hands

7.       Establish aseptic field and reapply gloves

8.       Perform treatment as ordered

9.       Remove gloves once dressing has been applied and the wound covered

10.   Place all waste in a plastic bag and seal

11.   Wash hands

12.   Return supplies to proper area
